Knit a Shrug with Toy Knitting Machine
With a bit of planning and some crochet skills , it is very possible ! This toy knitting machine is made by the company Tomy , Japan circa 1989 ( thank you Youtube commenter for info ) . There are 30 pins and by moving the pins around you can knit a variety of patterns. To make a shrug or a shawl, I knitted 2 identical pieces. Each piece is then single crochet around to lessen the curling.
It may seem like a lot of rows to knit but with the machine, it goes very fast. One swipe = One row.
I joined the two pieces together with ladder stitches. If you ladder stitch only on 1 leg of the single crochet it will give a flatter seam.
For the finishing, I did rib stitches on the short ends :
You can make the ribbing wider if you like. Just add more rows. Stack the front post / back post double crochets on top of each other. On the long sides, I did a row of double crochet. Towards the end of the row, I replaced 1 double crochet with a chain stitch to create a button hole. The button and button hole’s position are switched on the other end to give the shrug more wearing style.
Hope you enjoy this project. I just got my hands on a circular knitting machine ( also a second hand find ). Will post some more after I figure it out 🙂
